An unwanted pregnancy can plunge a woman into a state of extreme physical and emotional distress. Possibly alone and isolated, abused, raped, or fearing an honor killing, affected women can find anonymous and confidential professional help in any situation, to find a way out of their despair together.
In the Schwarzwald-Baar district, there are recognized pregnancy counseling centers that offer unbiased and non-denominational, even anonymous, counseling and work with pregnant women to develop solutions. The counseling sessions also focus on finding ways to live with the decision, whatever it may be. Decisions can vary widely. ProKids was convinced that a baby hatch can save lives and therefore implemented this large-scale project. Thanks to the initiative of the ProKids Foundation, the hatch was installed in the Franziskusheim at Neckarstraße 71 in the Schwenningen district. It is the first of its kind in the region. Even newborns should have a chance at life and a future.
The Franziskusheim, a home for children and seniors, is the ideal location for a baby hatch. Situated directly on the main road, it is easy and quick to find and reach. The hatch is located in a side area, ensuring complete discretion. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the baby hatch sends a signal to the Franziskusheim staff, who are on duty 24/7, as soon as it is opened and closed. This ensures that someone is immediately available to care for a newborn placed in the hatch, regardless of the time of day. The room is comfortably heated and a crib is provided. Since 2012, the hatch has saved the lives of five newborns.
